The best part of this job has never been the property. Don't get us wrong, we've got an entirely healthy (or arguably unhealthy) obsession with bricks, mortar and a good floor plan, but it's the people who make this job so special.
Helping clients buy and sell homes is what we do, but what stays with us are the relationships we build along the way. We meet people from every walk of life, each with their own story, their own passions and their own dreams. And every now and then, we get to watch one of those stories become something pretty extraordinary.
This week, one of our rockstar clients, Mia'Kate Russell, releases her first feature film, Penny Lane is Dead, in cinemas right across Australia! Yes, that’s right. Her first feature film. And it’s already kicking some major goals!
We couldn't be prouder. Mia'Kate isn't an overnight success. Far from it.
Before stepping into the director's chair for her debut feature, she'd already built a remarkable career in Australia's special effects and make-up industry, earning herself the nickname "The Blood Queen" thanks to decades spent creating some of the country's most inventive practical horror effects. Now she's bringing all of that creativity to the big screen.
Set during the sweltering summer of 1986, Penny Lane is Dead is a gloriously unapologetic love letter to Australian Ozploitation cinema. Think gritty 80s nostalgia, pitch-black humour, outrageous practical effects, plenty of blood, a queer love story at its heart and an unmistakably Australian attitude. Critics have described it as Puberty Blues colliding with Wake in Fright before descending into a nightmarish horror fever dream and somehow, that's exactly what makes it work. (ABC News)
What we admire most about Mia'Kate isn't just her talent. It's her determination. Making an independent Australian feature film isn't for the faint-hearted. It takes years of persistence, creativity, resilience and an incredible belief in your own vision. The easy option is giving up. Mia'Kate didn't. She kept going. And this week, that dream becomes reality as audiences around the country finally get to experience the film she's poured so much of herself into.
